Lerøy was founded in 1899, when fisherman Ole Mikkel Lerøen started to sell live fish at the fish market in Bergen, Norway. It was the fish he had caught himself or had bought from other fishermen.
The fish was hauled to the market in a hive behind his own rowing boat, a journey that could take up between 6 and 12 hours, depending on the winds and currents. Over time, the activities of Ole Mikkel Lerøen gradually developed into a retail company in Bergen with the sale of live shellfish and a start-up export company.
